Jewel-Osco® & FOX Chicago Launch ‘Choose to Reuse’ Bag Program

Goal to Save Millions of Plastic Bags from Landfills

(Itasca, Ill.) April 22, 2009 – JEWEL-OSCO, a leading Midwest food and drug retailer,
partnered with WFLD FOX Chicago this Earth Day to launch the “Choose to Reuse”
challenge, an initiative aimed at increasing consumer use of reusable bags to keep
millions of plastic bags from ending up in area landfills.

The “Choose to Reuse” program consisted of Public Service Announcements (PSAs)
created by and presented on FOX Chicago, including in-store advertising, and an Earth
Day promotion to give away free reusable bags to the first 100 customers who brought
in 10 plastic bags to be recycled at any JEWEL-OSCO store. “Good Day Chicago”
Meteorologist Mark Strehl also provided live reports throughout Earth Day morning from
JEWEL-OSCO’s first official “green” store, located at 370 N. Desplaines, in Chicago.

“Our company is dedicated to environmental stewardship and eliminating waste through
clean earth projects and recycling,” said JEWEL-OSCO President Keith Nielsen. “This
is a ‘green’ effort in which everyone can participate.”

JEWEL-OSCO has been on the forefront of recycling since 1942 when the company
launched its first paper recycling program. By 1990, the company began a plastic bag
recycling program. Since then, more than 14,200 tons of plastic bags have been
recycled, much of which has been turned into TREX lumber, a synthetic lumber product
used to build park benches, playground equipment and other durable products.

“FOX Chicago is proud to be a part of the ‘Choose to Reuse’ initiative,” said Patrick
Mullen, the station’s Vice President and General Manager. “This is a wonderful
opportunity to demonstrate simple ways that we can all help reduce waste and be a little
more ‘green’ in our everyday lives.”

In support of the “Choose to Reuse” program and the company’s partnership with FOX
Chicago, JEWEL-OSCO made $10,000 donations to two environmental organizations
on Earth Day – The Morton Arboretum, in Lisle, Illinois, and Chicago Gateway Green.
